The cell membrane is a fluid, flexible barrier that controls what goes in and out of the cell. It is not solid but is made up largely of many small molecules called phospholipids [FOSS-foe-lip-ids] that work together to create the membrane.
Since the inside of the cell AND the outside of the cell contains water, the phospholipids create a bilayer with the water-loving heads on the outside near the water/cytoplasm and the water-fearing tails safely inside.
The phospholipid bilayer also contains proteins that help to stabilize the membrane and provides passage for larger molecules into and out of the cell.
